Substituting bad habits:
Making REACH work for health,
environment and competitiveness

 16 May 2019
European Environmental Bureau
Alliance of Alternative Providers
Venue: European Parliament (TBC)

REACH aims to be the most ambitious chemical regulation in the
world, trying to protect citizens from harmful chemical exposure.
However, to this day only 1 out of 185 uses of substances of very
high concern (SVHC) has been denied authorisation.

This event reviews the legacy of the Juncker Commission (2015-2019)
on authorisation and substitution of SVHCs under REACH, looking at
the numbers and policy initiatives including a European strategy on
creating a non-toxic environment. What follows is a set of
recommendations for the next Commission.

The following topics will guide the discussion:

Blanket approval rates of applications for authorisation
lndustry playing for keeps by diversifying risk
Difference between risk assessor and risk manager
