Steelmaking contributes to 7 % of global CO2 emissions, and 4 % of all EU CO2 emissions. Successfully transitioning this hard-to-abate sector to decarbonised production methods is a key challenge for delivering a climate-neutral EU by 2050, and a key to fulfilling the Paris Agreement obligations.
HYBRIT proposes a debate that will focus on how innovation and new technologies are helping to decarbonise the steel sector, what the main obstacles are going forward and what can be done from a regulatory and funding perspective to boost the development. The groundbreaking HYBRIT project will share their experience and vision of the future, including a visual tour of their pilot plant launched in August 2020 – which will produce fossil-free iron by using fossil-free electricity and hydrogen.
HYBRIT, SSAB, LKAB and Vattenfall aim to create a completely fossil-free value chain from the mine to finished steel and to introduce a completely new technology using fossil-free hydrogen instead of coal and coke to reduce the oxygen in iron ore.
We will also take stock of the climate-related outcomes of the October European Council meeting and the Environment Council, at which it is hoped that the EU’s new and more ambitious 2030 climate targets will be agreed.

We hope you can be part of and benefit from this frank, timely discussion.
