policy impact with FIPRA
Before joining FIPRA Matti dedicated 25 years to serving as an EU civil servant, initially at the European Commission and later at the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA). During his tenure, he played a key role in shaping the EU’s climate change policies, particularly in the development of emissions trading systems. He also led the creation of the EU’s air pollution strategy and eventually headed units responsible for managing risks associated with hazardous chemicals.
Earlier in his career, Matti gained valuable experience working at the United Nations, the Finnish Foreign Ministry, and as a management consultant. Matti brings robust expertise in the EU’s chemicals, climate, and air pollution policies, with a particular focus on their economic impacts. He has published extensively on the economics of chemicals and climate change.
Currently, Matti is a Professor of Practice in Green Transition at the University of Helsinki and serves as a member of the UK REACH Independent Scientific Expert Pool.
He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Aalto University and an M.Sc. in Political Science from the University of Helsinki
