In March 2020, Detlef joined FIPRA as Special Advisor. Prior to his new position, from September 2017 to February 2020, he was with Huawei Technologies based in Shenzhen (China). Detlef has worked with governments across the world on digital issues, in particular linked to cloud computing, 5G, and artificial intelligence.
Detlef spent most of his career with the European Commission and prior to joining Huawei, he served as Director at the European Commission in various positions, including telecommunications, cyber-security, and internet governance.
From 2002 to 2006, whilst taking personal leave, Detlef joined Microsoft where he was responsible for the implementation of their Trustworthy Computing Initiative in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
Before moving to Brussels in 1988, Detlef worked for the Ministry of Economic Affairs of the Federal State of Bremen (Germany).
Detlef graduated from the University of Siegen with a degree in Economics and later obtained a Doctorate in Economics from the same university.
